Equipment brought to waste transfer stations in Male' and Villimale'

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has stated that the equipment and vehicles to be used at waste transfer stations in Male' and Villimale' has been delivered to the Maldives.

The equipment is part of the final preparations for the waste transfer stations in Male' and Villimale' to be completed by the third quarter of this year. The equipment were brought to Thilafushi in Kaafu Atoll, on June 10. The equipment to be used in the operation of the waste transfer station include a roller packer, wheel loader, arm roll truck, street sweeper truck, forklift, container for waste, mobile conveyor, fuel storage unit for vehicles.

The environment ministry stated that the new waste transfer stations are designed to compress waste and transport in containers to Thilafushi. Brand new containers, arm roll trucks for lifting containers and special roll packers to reduce the volume of waste in containers have also been brought in for use at the transfer station being set up in Male' and Villimale'. In addition, it prevent vehicles from boarding the waste barge for disposal of waste in bulk. The waste in the garbage truck will be drained by a special weigh bridge and then dumped into a container through the waste tipping platform on the first floor of the transfer station. All vehicles will discard waste from the tipping platform into standard containers.

The equipment and vehicles were imported under the Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project and funded by the government of the Maldives and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a cost of USD3.1 million. The installation and commissioning of the equipment has been entrusted to China State Construction and Engineering Limited, which is contracted to work on the waste transfer stations in Male' and Villimale'.

The new waste transfer stations in Male' and Villimale' will be located at the sites where Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) is currently operating. These transfer stations are spacious and designed to seamlessly handle small and medium-sized pickups, dump trucks and heavy-duty garbage trucks. The new waste transfer station and administration building in Male' and Villimale' are also designed to protect against natural disasters and weather hazards.
