President and First Lady encourage athletes going to Special Olympics World Games

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have met and encouraged the athletes from the Maldives who are participating in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023.

Speaking about the meeting, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof said he thanked President Solih and First Lady Fazna for their close attention to the disabled and individuals with special needs. He also said the meeting with the president brought immense encouragement to the athletes and he hoped that the athletes would make the Maldives proud through the competition.

The Special Olympics World Games will be held in Berlin, Germany, from June 17-25. Maldives will be competing in athletics and badminton. A total of two athletes will compete in the badminton singles event. Athletes taking part in athletics will compete in the 100m, 200m, and standing jump events.

It is the second time the Maldives has competed in the Special Olympics World Games. In 2019, the Maldives competed only in athletics at the World Games held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
