The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced that voters in islands other than their resident islands will be able to re-register online for this year's presidential election.
Speaking to PSM News, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that three main changes have been made to the newly formulated rules. He also said the opportunity to apply online and an easy complaint system will be established in addition to the re-registration form. In addition, he said the opportunity to submit complaints online on focal points will also be given as it was not available previously. As such, he said the opportunity to submit complaints will remain open until June 22 and re-registration will be open from July 16 to August 5.
ECM stated that the eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,755 voters. It includes 144,408 males and 138,347 females. The deadline for nominations is July 23 to August 3. The names of the candidates will be announced on August 9. Candidates will be given the opportunity to campaign from August 10 to September 8. The presidential election will be held on September 9 and a possible second round would be held on September 30.
