JP awards presidential ticket to Qasim

Jumhooree Party (JP) has awarded its ticket to Qasim Ibrahim to run in the upcoming presidential election.

JP Leader Qasim was awarded the presidential ticket at a special ceremony at Alimas Carnival in Male’ City. JP has also launched its presidential campaign with the official campaign slogan and song. After receiving the ticket, Qasim addressed his supporters and highlighted his policies and priorities as the presidential candidate.

Qasim was the only member of JP to have submitted his candidacy for the primary election. He had contested the 2008 and 2013 presidential elections but did not garner enough votes to reach the second round in either election. JP decided to field a candidate and lead its own coalition for the presidential election at a time when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih invited the party to rejoin the ruling government coalition.

The presidential election will be held on September 9. Those who have announced their intention to run in the election include President Solih, who won the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary election, and the candidate of the main opposition coalition former President Abdulla Yameen, who is serving an 11-year prison sentence over corruption and money laundering. He will receive the opportunity to run in the election if he wins the appeal case.

Additionally, President of the Maldives National Party (MNP) Mohamed Nazim has received his party ticket while former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer and former Attorney General (AG) Dr. Mohamed Munawar have announced their intention to run in the election.
