Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology stated that additional vehicles for Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) within the next six months to further strengthen waste collection service in Male' City.
The environment ministry noted that there are not enough vehicles in addition to the compactors currently used for waste collection in Male'. As such, the ministry placed an order for 12 vehicles from an Armenian company for WAMCO.
Speaking to PSM News, Consultant for the Greater Male’ Waste-to-Energy Project Ahmed Azim said that the vehicles will arrive within the next six months. He also said that the arrival of these vehicles will further strengthen the waste collection operation in the city.
WAMCO implemented the policy of segregating waste before collection from households in July last year. However, the segregated waste bags are collected and transported together using trucks and the company has addressed concerns by stating that the bags are separated once again at the waste management site.
WAMCO is currently using the same vehicles since it first began its services in 2017. These vehicles are outdated and the company is facing difficulties in transporting waste. WAMCO is currently running at a loss and has no way of getting new vehicles. As such, the environment ministry has begun the procurement of vehicles under the government's Waste-to-Energy Project.
