Parliament can proceed with Eva’s no-confidence motion: MDP

The Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Aslam said that the Parliament of the Maldives can proceed with the no-confidence motion submitted against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla without making changes to the existing committees.

The notice sent to Deputy Speaker Eva in the motion against her expires on May 11. However, the Parliament has decided not to schedule the motion for the date, citing that necessary changes have not been brought to the committees. The Parliament said the General Purposes Committee has not decided on a debate time for the motion.

The secretary-general is responsible for providing notice to the parliamentarians and the speaker within three days of receiving a no-confidence motion. The motion is then scheduled to be discussed during the earliest sitting that takes place 14 days after the notice is given. The Parliament can resume its regular proceedings and address other matters after a decision is reached on the no-confidence motion.

Speaking at a press conference, PG Leader Aslam said that there are no laws to hold the entire Parliament at a standstill by claiming the committee has not decided on debate time for the motion. He also called on the secretary-general to hold a meeting with the General Purposes Committee to pave the way to schedule the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva. He also added the political parties do not need to come to an agreement on the composition of committees.
