The Secretariat of the Parliament has stated that the no-confidence motion against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed will proceed in accordance with the Constitution and parliamentary regulations.
The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed with 54 signatures. The removal of the speaker or deputy speaker requires a majority vote from parliamentarians. Specifically, if all 87 members are present, a minimum of 44 members must vote in favour of the no-confidence motion to pass.
The secretary-general is responsible for providing notice to the parliamentarians and the speaker within three days of receiving a no-confidence motion. The motion is then scheduled to be discussed during the earliest sitting that takes place 14 days after the notice is given. The Parliament can resume its regular proceedings and address other matters after a decision is reached on the no-confidence motion.
Additionally, the 14-day notice for Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla to respond to her own no-confidence motion will expire on June 11. While a sitting was initially scheduled for that date, the speaker has announced that the next sitting will be held on June 15. The proceedings for the no-confidence motion can only take place once the General Purpose Committee assigns time for the debate. However, due to recent party changes by 13 parliamentarians, the work of the committees has been halted, as the parties are yet to reach an agreement on the new composition of the committees.
