Gov't to produce eco-friendly products under Ukulhas brand

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has signed an agreement with the Ukulhas Women’s Development Committee (WDC) and the Ukulhas Tourism Board to facilitate the production of environmentally friendly products under a special brand of Ukulhas.

The agreement was signed by Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Technology Dr. Abdulla Naseer, President of the WDC in Ukulhas Zahiyya Mohamed, and President of the Ukulhas Tourism Board Abdul Sameeu Imad during the function held to commemorate World Environment Day 2023 held in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll.

Speaking to PSM News, Zahiyya said that the purpose of creating such a brand is to raise awareness among society that waste can be reused. She also said such a brand will bring great benefits to the development and tourism in the island and it will reduce the amount of waste discarded into the environment.

At the World Environment Day function, certificates were also awarded to individuals who participated in a canvas bag sewing training programme conducted by WDC and the environment ministry to facilitate the production of environmentally friendly products under a special brand of Ukulhas. Around 500 canvas bags made during the training programme were handed over to the island council to be distributed to the households in Ukulhas.

The government is working hard to reduce the amount of single-use plastics or disposable items imported into the Maldives. The government also aims to make the Maldives a carbon net-zero country by 2030.
