Gov’t reduces single-use plastic imports by 50%

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the administration’s plan to phase out 13 types of single-use plastics has successfully reduced single-use plastic imports by 50%. He made the remark at the function held to mark World Environment Day 2023 in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll.

Speaking at the function, President Solih addressed the prominent environmental issues and concerns confronting the nation. He highlighted waste management, the prevalence of single-use plastics, and the pressing challenge of climate change as the primary areas of concern for the Maldives.

Additionally, President Solih reiterated the administration's commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices and reducing the reliance on single-use plastics. He emphasised that the administration has implemented a comprehensive plan to phase out 13 types of single-use plastics and has successfully reduced single-use plastic imports by 50%. He added that these efforts demonstrate the administration's dedication to addressing the country's major environmental concerns of waste management and single-use plastics.

Regarding climate change, President Solih highlighted the need to adapt and mitigate its impact and acknowledge that it presents a significant challenge. He outlined the allocation of funds from the Maldives Green Fund for specific projects aimed at environmental protection and conservation, human resource development, institutional strengthening, and research and development. He also said the fund is being utilised to assist non-governmental organisations (NGOs), demonstrating the administration's commitment to supporting relevant initiatives.

Furthermore, President Solih emphasised the importance of sustainable utilisation of marine resources, considering that 99% of the country's territory is composed of the ocean. He highlighted the significance of minimising threats to the marine ecosystem, as it would contribute to the development of the tourism and fisheries sectors. He further mentioned the implementation of the marine spatial plan to safeguard ocean regions and the administration's focus on addressing waste management challenges.
