President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attended the Beat Plastic Festival held in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll, as part of the official events to mark World Environment Day 2023.
During his visit, President Solih attended the Beat Plastic Festival and toured the stalls, which provided information on proper waste management and sustainable resource use for a healthy environment. The festival was held by the Ukulhas Island Council and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology in collaboration with government institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
During the festival, attendees were educated about the environmental and health concerns associated with plastic usage. They were also provided with information about the detrimental effects of plastic and the government's initiative to stop the import, sale, and use of single-use plastics and promote safer alternatives. Exhibitors also focused on increasing public awareness about environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle changes such as replacing disposable plastic items in households with sustainable alternatives.
Additionally, a tree planting programme was conducted during the festival to plant a new generation of trees in Ukulhas. A seminar was also held to educate school students and government workers in Ukulhas on the dangers of plastic and its harmful effects.
World Environment Day is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is held annually on June 5. It is the biggest international day for the environment and this year’s theme focuses on solutions to plastic pollution.
