PPM appoints campaign managers for presidential election

The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has appointed campaign managers for its presidential candidate leader Abdulla Yameen for the 2023 presidential election.

PPM said it has appointed former Director of Flight Operations of Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) Captain Mohamed Ameen as the campaign manager and former Minster of Health Abdulla Nazim as the deputy manager of the presidential candidate. The newly appointed campaign manager and deputy campaign manager were handed over their letters of appointment at a special ceremony held at the main office of the party.

The appointment of campaign managers comes while it remains unclear whether former President Yameen can contest the election to be held on September 9. In November last year, Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison in December 2022 after the Criminal Court found him guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in relation to the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll, for resort development through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). He is unable to contest the election unless the Higher Court of the Maldives quashes the verdict of the Criminal Court of the Maldives.
