The Democrats have submitted 3,560 applications to register the party.
In May, the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) granted permission to former members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to form a new party called The Democrats. A total of 3,000 party application forms are needed to register a political party.
Parliamentarian Hassan Latheef has submitted the party applications to ECM. He emphasised the significant number of applicants and expressed the determination of The Democrats to expand its membership base. He also said that its presidential campaign will encompass the entire country.
