Gov't says stalled committees impede legislative agenda

The President's Office has expressed concern over the suspension of work at the parliamentary committees, which has significantly affected the administration's legislative agenda. The halt was a result of the Parliament's failure to change the committee composition following the resignation of 12 parliamentarians from the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

At a press conference, the Spokesperson at the President’s Office Miuvaan Mohamed voiced concern over the suspension of parliamentary activities, emphasising that the Parliament plays a vital role in addressing the needs of citizens. He said that the situation has resulted in the stalling of crucial bills within the legislative agenda. He highlighted that the Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has already expressed concern over the failure to place two bills proposed by the government to protect workers' rights on the agenda.

Additionally, Miuvaan noted that important bills are stalled in various parliamentary committees, including the bills on food safety, animal health, land-use planning, and insurance, as well as numerous amendment bills. He said the administration wants to complete the work on the bills to benefit citizens as soon as possible.

Political parties and independent members have failed to agree on the composition of committees despite holding multiple meetings. MDP stated it will make a decision if further discussions this week do not result in a solution.
