Parliamentary committee reviews Nashaath for new ECM term

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has begun reviewing the appointment of Ali Nashaath for a new term as a Member of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has nominated applicants who responded to the announcement to appoint a member to the ECM, as Nashaath is nearing the end of his term. The president prioritised Nashaath among the applicants, as he has been a member of ECM since 2018. The president will appoint a member to ECM after the parliament approves one of the nominees.

ECM currently consists of Chairman Fuad Thaufeeq, Vice Chairman Ismail Habeeb, and members Ali Nashaath, Dr. Mohamed Zahir, and Mohamed Asif. The electoral body is responsible for conducting, managing, and supervising elections while ensuring the right to vote and holding free and fair elections without intimidation or corruption. It also registers political parties, formulates electoral policies, provides training, approves observers, and performs other functions specified by the constitution and law.
