Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu has revealed that 22 inmates from the ones being released after undergoing the prison-based drug rehabilitation programme are successfully completing it without any difficulties so far. He made the statement while speaking at the graduation ceremony of the officers that took part in the 9th Custodial Management and Security Programme conducted by the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS)
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Mohamed Fulhu said a total of 32 prisoners have completed the first round of the programme and have been released back to the community. He, however, said that 22 inmates from 32 are successfully completing it without any difficulties so far.
Additionally, Commissioner Ahmed Fulhu said the implementation of such programmes should be increased across the country. He also said MCS needs to implement proper rehabilitation techniques when conducting such programmes.
MCS stated that an average of 64 individuals were arrested every month last year. The correctional service also released 40 inmates each month. For the past five years, about 1,489 inmates have been held in prisons every year.
