Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has stated that appropriate action was taken against party members who violated the party's constitution and rules after attempts to find solutions by negotiations had failed.
During a press conference held at the MDP Office, Fayyaz elaborated on the reasons behind taking action against certain members in response to internal disagreements within the party. He emphasised that MDP operates based on specific rules and policies, which cannot be altered to suit individual preferences.
Furthermore, Fayyaz disclosed that the divergence in political ideologies led to the formation of factions, causing internal conflicts within the party. He stressed that the decision to take action was made after careful consideration and after giving multiple opportunities to solve the disagreements.
Additionally, Fayyaz acknowledged the immense respect that President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed commands among party members, making it challenging to take action against him. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with President Nasheed, stating that the party is prepared to work together if the opportunity arises. He clarified that the differences of opinion within MDP revolve around power dynamics. He, however, emphasised that it is impossible to change the situation when a clear majority of the party's ordinary members have nominated an alternative candidate.
