MDP PG passes to remove Eva as Deputy Parliament Speaker

The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) unanimously passed a motion to remove Eva Abdulla from her position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament. The decision was made during a group meeting led by PG Leader Mohamed Aslam.

Eva resigned from MDP on May 17 prompting the party's decision to remove her as Deputy Speaker. The MDP PG is currently gathering signatures for a no-confidence motion against Eva, which will be submitted to the Parliament once administrative procedures are completed.

The removal of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker requires a resolution signed by at least one-fourth of the total number of parliamentarians, which amounts to 22 signatures out of the 87 parliamentarians, according to the Constitution of the Maldives. Additionally, the constitution allows for the removal of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker by a two-thirds majority, which is equivalent to 43 votes in the Parliament.

Twelve MDP parliamentarians, including Eva, have publicly announced their intention to leave MDP and form a new political party.
