Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has emphasised that the introduction and implementation of a criminal justice database system marks a significant advancement in the government's ongoing efforts to combat corruption. He made the statement while speaking at the inaugural session of the Criminal Justice Sector High-Level Conference in JEN Maldives. The conference is held as part of the Data Management Project carried out by the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the government of Australia.
During the event, the Criminal Justice Database was officially launched with the aim of facilitating seamless information exchange among various agencies within the criminal justice system. The conference served as an opportunity to familiarise the participating agencies with the newly implemented Criminal Justice Database System and provide them with essential information about its functionalities. The database consists of two parts, enabling efficient data sharing among institutions involved in the criminal justice system, which ensures that the statistical data contained in it is transparent to the public. The inauguration of the Criminal Justice Database System and the opening of the conference were carried out by Vice President Faisal Naseem.
Speaking at the event, PG Shameem underscored that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has specifically directed crime prevention agencies to strengthen their relationships and actively share information and resources. He further highlighted that the system, which was introduced under his guidance, aims to enhance transparency in the implementation of the criminal justice system and provide additional support to the relevant agencies.
Furthermore, PG Shameem expressed his confidence that the database would effectively address numerous challenges currently faced in the implementation of the criminal justice system. He elaborated that when the police register a case through this system, the relevant authorities will be automatically informed and provided with the necessary information.
The Criminal Justice Database System was developed by Javaabu Private Limited.
