The Supreme Court of the Maldives has upheld both the Criminal Court of the Maldives and the High Court of the Maldives rulings to dismiss the pre-trial motion submitted by former President Abdulla Yameen following the two charges against him in the Fuhgiri trial.
Former President Yameen made pre-trial submissions in the Fuggiri case at the Criminal Court, asking the court to reject some of the state's evidence and to disclose the confidential evidence of the state. He appealed the case at the High Court after the Criminal Court rejected the three motions. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court after the High Court upheld the Criminal Court's decision. The Supreme Court ruled that there was no place to overturn the decision of the Criminal Court and the High Court.
In December 2022, the Criminal Court sentenced former President Yameen to 11 years in prison after finding him and others guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in relation to the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll, for resort development through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and deposited USD1 million to his account at HSBC, and a total of USD1.3 million at Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) in February 2017. He then took the amount and further funds from his investment account at MIB for investments in March 2021.
