The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that it will take action against members acting in violation of the party's constitution and policies.
Some parliamentarians have been criticising the government's policies openly following the MDP presidential primary, Some parliamentarians are also violating the MDP's whip lines in some votes in Parliament and supporting the opposition's anti-governmental activities.
Vice Chairperson of MDP and Minister at the President's Office Ibrahim Waheed said that the party runs on certain policies and principles. He said MDP decided to take action against individuals that violate the party's policies and actions against the presidential candidate nominated by the party members. He also said that action will be taken against members that are participating in various political activities conducted by the opposition parties and acting against the decisions taken by MDP.
Furthermore, Minister Waheed said MDP fully supports the government's decision on the Chagos Islands dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius and will take action against members involved in joint activities of the opposition. He also MDP’s constitution applies to all the members and should not be violated by any individual despite the position held by them.
