PGO seeking Adeeb's USD130,000 fine

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has filed a lawsuit against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb seeking a USD130,000 fine over the corruption scandal of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The Criminal Court of the Maldives has sentenced Adeeb to 20 years in prison and a fine of USD130,000 after he pleaded guilty to the charges pressed against him in relation to the corruption scandal of MMPRC. However, Adeeb has not paid the fine to the state yet. The AGO has now filed a case against Adeeb at the Civil Court of the Maldives. However, no verdict has been made so far.

The PGO pressed seven charges against Adeeb, including two charges for participating in the embezzlement of state funds, two charges for money laundering, two charges for influence peddling, and one charge for illicit use of an official position. Adeeb pleaded guilty to all charges in accordance with the confession agreement made between him and the state.

Criminal Court has issued separate sentences for each of the seven charges. As such, Adeeb was handed a sentence of five years and 11 months, along with a fine of USD65,000, for each of the two money laundering charges pressed against him. Meanwhile, he was given two sentences of four years and two years respectively for the two embezzlement charges.

Furthermore, Adeeb was handed a six-month sentence and a one-month sentence for the two charges involving influence peddling. He was also sentenced to a further three months in prison for illicit use of an official position. In total, Adeeb has been sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined USD130,000. He has been placed under house arrest due to his illness.
