MTCC completes Kinolhas harbor project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the development of the harbour in Kinolhas, Raa Atoll,

Under the project, MTCC dredged a 31,726cbm area for the new harbor basin, dredged a 15,252cbm area for the old harbor basin, dredged a 1,920abm area for the channel, and dredged an additional 6,100cbm for the anchorage area. The company also built a 186m quay wall, repaired a 172m area of the old quay wall, built a 65m revetment, built a 130m groyne, installed 1,884sqm of harbor pavement, constructed a jetty, installed beacons, mooring blocks, and ramps. The value of the project is USD3 million.

MTCC began the project in 2021 after the harbour was made unusable after the channel was obstructed by sand. The residents in Kinolhas said they had issues with sand obstructing the channel since the development of the harbour in 2008. The issue has caused problems in transporting agricultural products from Kinolhas and transporting goods to the island. The project is expected to solve the longstanding problem of sand obstructing the harbour, which alleviates travel and transport issues for the 600 residents living on the island.
