MNP wins Dhidhdhoo by-election

A candidate from the Maldives National Party (MNP) has won the by-election of the Dhidhdhoo Island Council. It is the first time MNP won a seat in a local council since its formation.

A total of two candidates contested in the Dhidhdhoo by-election. Anees Mohamed from MNP won the seat with 62 votes. His opponent Rasheeda Adam, who contested as an independent candidate, got 57 votes. A total of 106 of the 147 people who are eligible to vote in the by-election cast their ballots.

President of MNP Mohamed Nazim contacted Anees and congratulated him following the historic victory. The party has participated in all the recent elections held in the country. However, MNP has lost recent elections to the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
