Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to conduct the shore protection projects in Dhigurah in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and Maalhendhoo in Noonu Atoll. The agreement was signed by the Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shana Farooq and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim.
As part of the project, MTCC will build shore protection structures in Dhigurah within 150 days at a cost of USD834,000. The scope of the project includes building a 127m revetment, 15m groynes, a backfill, and geotubes in a land area of 420m. MTCC has also been contracted for the extension of the jetty on the island to stop erosion.
The state-owned company will also build shore protection structures in Maalhendhoo within 270 days at a cost of USD2.2 million. The scope of the project includes dredging of 735.9cbm of harbor basin, building a 73m groyne, 386m revetment, and 175m geobag revetment. In addition, 47m of road canal, the installation of mooring buoys, a bridge, a jetty, 928sqm of pavement, and harbour lights will be installed as part of the project.
The government is conducting major projects to solve the problems of erosion in the islands.
