Ex-President being treated well in prison: Gov’t

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated that former President Abdulla Yameen is being treated well in prison by authorities.

In a statement on Twitter, Minister Imran responded to concerns over Yameen’s safety and claims that he had installed cameras inside the former president’s prison cell. He noted that Yameen has been jailed twice and that the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) is insuring his safety and is treating him well. He further said that he would find any action that violates Yameen’s human rights unacceptable. He also said that that Yameen is the prisoner that officers of MCS have served the most.

Former President Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence after being found guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in relation to the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll, for resort development through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). He is serving his sentence in Maafushi Prison.
