Gov’t declares end to prison abuse

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has declared that the era of prison abuse is over and warned that any officials caught in such incidents will be subjected to appropriate punishment. He made the remark at the ceremony held to mark the 90th anniversary of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Imran said that incidents of prison abuse are now rare and are promptly investigated by a team led by the prisons commissioner. He emphasised that any such incident is unacceptable and that officials found guilty will be appropriately punished.

Additionally, Minister Imran highlighted that police officers have a duty to uphold the law and ensure public safety, but they should also exercise restraint and minimise harm when dealing with alleged criminals. He also said that any incident in which a police officer harmed an innocent person is unacceptable, but also urged citizens to refrain from disparaging the police service over the actions of individual officers. He added that he met with police officers stationed in islands and found that they do not have adequate resources.
