HRCM requests to pay attention to temperature in prison cells

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has requested that law enforcement agencies pay special attention to the temperature inside prison cells.

In a statement, HRCM said the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has said that the Maldives is experiencing unusually hot weather. HRCM stated that the feels-like temperature in the country has risen to 43 degrees Celsius, according to Met Office.

Therefore, HRCM called to ensure cooler temperatures in places where prisoners are held under the custody of law enforcement agencies. HRCM also notes problems with the ventilation in the prison cells and requested enforcement agencies to pay special attention to the unusually hot weather.

HRCM also requested the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to make all necessary arrangements to prevent further heating of the cells.
