WAMCO collects 31% more waste during Ramadan

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has stated that the amount of garbage collected from households in the Greater Male' Region has increased by 31% during the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is usually a month of more food preparation than other months and the amount of waste generated increases. As such, WAMCO stated that the waste generated during Ramadan has increased similar to previous years. The amount of waste collected during the Ramadan month has increased by 31%. In the first week of Ramadan, 919 tonnes of waste was collected but the figure increased by 32% to 1,215 tonnes. WAMCO also stated that the number of individuals disposing of waste that has been separated has increased from 10-20%.

In addition, WAMCO stated that the amount of waste littered on the streets has also increased during Ramadan causing severe inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists. Therefore, a large amount of waste has been removed from the roads to maintain cleanliness.

WAMCO is providing waste disposal services in three ways, including house-to-house waste disposal services, waste collection services from the company's waste transfer centres, and Call and Pickup Services (CAPS).
