The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that more than 3,500 accidents occurred in 2022, which is 1,000 more accidents compared to 2021.
The statistics published by MPS show that the highest number of accidents occurred in the Greater Male' Region. Accidents in the Maldives are increasing and the number of individuals suffering fatalities and permanent injuries is increasing year by year, according to the statistics.
Furthermore, the statistics showed that a total of 3,591 accidents were reported in the country in 2022, which is 1,070 more accidents compared to 2021. Statistics also show that the highest number of accidents occurred in the Greater Male' Region in 2022. As such, there were 2,941 accidents that occurred in Male' and Hulhumale' last year, which is an increase of 965 accidents compared to 2021. A total of 1,136 accidents occurred in Hulhumale' and 130 accidents occurred in Hulhule' last year.
The statistics showed that the number of accidents reported in the atolls is low in proportion to the population of the area, but the proportion has increased in some areas. In 2022, Addu City reported 194 accidents last year. Of these, 130 accidents were reported in Hithadhoo.
In addition, the number of deaths caused by road accidents is relatively lower in 2022 compared to 2021. As such, a total of four individuals died in accidents in the Greater Male' Region and one death in Addu.
