Addu Council to take action against illegal sand, coral collection

Addu City Council has warned to take action against illegal sand and coral collection. The council stated that sand and coral collection is being conducted from the beach in Meedhoo for various purposes.

The statement issued by the Addu City Council on the issue of illegal sand and coral collection stated that it is the individual's responsibility to protect and maintain the natural environment, natural resources, and beauty for the benefit of present and future generations. The council urged individuals to collect sand after receiving permits from local councils, in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations and warned it will impose fines and take strict penalties for those violating the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act. The council stated that it has also received information that sand and coral are being collected from the beach in Meedhoo. Action will be taken against individuals who illegally remove or sell sand and coral, according to the council.

The local councils have the authority to oversee the collection of sand for specific purposes, in accordance with the Decentralisation Act, and individuals can obtain information regarding islands from which sand can be collected through the local councils.
