Parliamentarian Ali Hameed has left Jumhooree Party (JP) and joined main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Parliamentarian Hameed signed his membership application at a special ceremony with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and senior MDP members in attendance. The number of parliamentary representatives of MDP has now increased to 67.
Many members of JP, including ministers and senior government officials, have decided to resign and support President Solih for the upcoming presidential election after the party decided to leave the ruling government coalition and field its own candidate.
