Tourism Minister endorses President for re-election

Minister of Tourism Abdulla Mausoom has endorsed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for re-election.

In a tweet, Minister Mausoom said he endorses President Solih for a second term in office as it is the best option for the nation and its citizens. He received his government post on a Jumhooree Party (JP) slot but announced his decision to support President Solih after JP decided to field its own candidate as the leader of its own coalition for the upcoming presidential election.

Many government officials who received their positions in the JP slots have pledged their support to President Solih after JP decided to leave the ruling government coalition. They include the Chief Executive Office (CEO) of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim and the Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Hassan Shah.

Of the remaining ruling coalition partners, Adhalaath Party (AP) has decided to rejoin the coalition for a second term and the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has not yet announced a decision. However, the Maldives Development Alliance has joined the ruling coalition led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The presidential election will be held on September 9. Individuals who have officially announced their bid to run in the election are President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Abdulla Yameen, President of Maldives National Party (MNP) Mohamed Nazim, and former Attorney General (AG) Dr. Mohamed Munavvaru.
