The Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has announced the population of the Maldives has increased to over 500,000.
Citing the census data collected so far, the MBS said the population of the Maldives is recorded at 515,122. The total population includes 382,751 Maldivians and 132,371 foreigners. Approximately 26% of the population are foreigners with one foreigner living in the Maldives for every three Maldivians.
The statistics show that 41% of the resident population lives in Male' City, 46% lives in admin islands, 10% lives in resorts, and 3% lives in industrial islands. The statistics also show that Addu City has the largest population among the atolls, followed by Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Addu has a resident population of 5% and Haa Dhaalu Atoll has a population of 4% of the total population of the Maldives.
Furthermore, the population of children under the age of 14 has decreased in the last eight years, according to the statistics. The number of individuals aged 15-64 increased by 69% between 2014-2022. In addition, the population over the age of 65 remained at 5% of the population.
