Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has resigned from his position as an Advisor to the Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim.
In a letter made public on social media, Azim said he was resigning from the post as he supports President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in his bid for a second time. Azim explained that he believes the election of President Solih for a second term is the most beneficial course of action for the future of the Maldives and all its citizens. He also added that he believes President Solih is the only leader who can maintain stability across the nation.
Additionally, Azim said he does not think it is the best way to be an advisor to another candidate as he has already decided to support President Solih. He and several other senior members of JP have decided to leave the party and support President Solih. In addition, Vice President Faisal Naseem has also said he supports President Solih's re-election bid for a second term.
Meanwhile, Qasim has decided to contest the presidential election although JP is part of the ruling coalition. Of the remaining coalition partners, Adhalaath Party (AP) has decided to rejoin the coalition for a second term and the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has not yet announced a decision. However, the Maldives Development Alliance has joined the ruling coalition led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
President Solih came to power in 2018 with a wide coalition consisting of MRM, JP, and AP.
