Imports increase by 18% in February

The Maldives Customs Service (MCS) has revealed that the value of imports increased by 18% in February this year compared to the same period last year.

The statistics of MCS show that goods worth USD272.3 million were imported to the Maldives in February this year which is an increase of 18% compared to USD233.4 million in February 2022. India, and Oman were the biggest contributors to imports. As such, USD43.7 million in goods were imported from India and USD41.6 million in goods were imported from Oman.

Meanwhile, exports declined in February this year. Exports stood USD14.9 million which is a 0.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. In February 2022, exports stood at USD15.1 million. The Maldives exports the largest amount of fish. Skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna account for the majority of these. Statistics show that Thailand was the biggest contributor to imports in February this year.

The statistics also showed the revenue of exports decreased compared to last year. Imports and exports earned USD19.5 million this year. However, this figure is a 8% decrease compared to the USD21.1 million received by the state in February 2022.
