ECM opens applications for observers, monitors for presidential election

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has begun accepting applications for observers and monitors for the upcoming presidential election.

ECM will accept applications from individuals that are accredited by their media organisation or civil society organisation. They should also be above 18 years of age and not involved in campaigning for a candidate. Interested individuals are required to submit their application by July 25.

ECM is also seeking 5,600 officials to be stationed at polling stations during the presidential election. Interested individuals are required to submit their application by June 22, and the electoral body will extend the deadline if they do not receive the necessary number of applications.

ECM will place over 600 ballot boxes for the presidential election to be held on September 9, which is the largest number of boxes to be placed in any election in the Maldives. The electoral body stated the presidential election will have the highest number of new voters. The eligible voting population for the election is over 280,000 voters, which includes 21,000 newly eligible voters.
