Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has revealed that the state recovered USD13,000 of USD2.3 million in 2022.
In the yearly report, ACC stated that it conducted follow-up investigations on 28 cases and found that the state is owed USD2.3 million but the total amount recovered was around USD13,000 after the investigation of 18 cases.
In total, ACC concluded 434 cases in 2022, which include five cases related to corruption and 429 cases that were not related to corruption. A total of 209 cases were from Male’ City, 28 cases were from the southernmost atolls, and 26 cases were from the northernmost atolls.
Speaking to PSM News, Assistant Director Aishath Areefa said ACC is continually instructing the relevant authorities to recover state assets following their investigations. She said the commission also monitors the process of asset recovery and that the authorities that are working to recover state assets include the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs, and local councils.
Furthermore, ACC had 1,585 open cases by the end of 2022 with 485 cases in the evaluation stage and 1,100 cases in the investigation stage. Most of the cases are related to procurement. The commission is currently investigating 158 cases related to asset recovery.
