ECM dissolves DRP and MLSDP

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed that the Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) and the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) have been dissolved.

ECM decided to dissolve both parties after they failed to fulfill the membership requirement by the given deadline. A political party can only get registered if it has a minimum of 3,000 members, according to the Political Parties Act. ECM stated that both parties also did not notify the individual responsible for the debt issues within the deadline. Therefore, the individual who was the highest official of the party at the time of the debt will be held responsible under the Political Parties Act.

ECM has also permitted Parliamentarian Abdulla Jabir to form the Green Party of Maldives (GPM). ECM earlier revealed that Jabir had left DRP after resigning as its leader after the decision was made to dissolve the party.

DRP had 2,242 members as of February 21 and MLSDP had 2,556 members, according to ECM.
