Digital ID card cannot be used for voting

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has stated that the National Digital Identification Card cannot be used to cast votes.

The relevant state authorities are preparing to introduce the digital ID card to the public. The purpose of the digital ID card is to protect the personal information of the holder with enhanced security features. The holder will be able to use the card with the eFaas mobile application, which will hold all state-issued digital cards.

Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said the law does not allow the use of digital ID cards to cast votes. He clarified that the digital card can only be used with a phone, which is not allowed inside polling stations. He, however, said discussions are being held on allowing voters to use their digital card to re-register their voting location.
