MTCC begins Dhigurah Harbour Development Project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the development of the harbour in Dhigurah, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

The scope of the project includes dredging operations of 64,416cbm, channel dredging operations of 6,770cbm, construction of a 294m quay wall, a 287m breakwater, a 98m revetment, installation of 2,324sqm harbor pavement, construction of a ramp, a jetty, an apron, installation of harbor lights. The value of the project is USD3.2 million.

Dhigurah has a population of 680 residents and is reliant on its local tourism business, which has been thriving with 23 guesthouses. However, the harbour has been hindering progress as tourists and transport vessels face challenges in docking at the harbour due to the lack of space.

The harbour was built in the early 2000s and is still in adequate condition. However, the limited space hinders movement to and from Dhigurah, which is becoming an increasing problem as more tourists visit the island. The harbour also serves many boats registered at diving schools and vessels bringing in material for construction projects to the island.
