Maldives to resume diplomatic ties with Iran

The government of the Maldives has decided to resume diplomatic ties with Iran.

In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the Joint Trilateral Statement by Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China announcing that an agreement has been reached between Saudi Arabia and Iran that includes an agreement to resume diplomatic relations between the two countries. As such, the two countries agreed to reopen their embassies and missions and affirmed the respect for the sovereignty of states and the non-interference in internal affairs of states.

The foreign ministry described the agreement as positive and stated that the government of the Maldives has decided to resume diplomatic ties with Iran. The Maldives first established diplomatic relations with Iran in 1975 and decided to cut off ties in 2016 after stating that Iran was threatening the peace and security in the Gulf region.
