Speaker recommends increasing role of women in Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has recommended lawmakers propose laws to increase the role of women in the Parliament of the Maldives.

Speaking at the sitting held on International Women’s Day, Speaker Nasheed said that the public will be critical of the level of involvement of women in the Parliament and that it is the responsibility of the political parties to propose the necessary legal changes to increase their representation. He also urged all lawmakers to support the initiative.

The Parliament consists of 87 parliamentarians, of which four are women. They are Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, and parliamentarians Rozaina Adam, Jeehan Mahmood, and Hisaan Hussain.
