Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has given a warning to leaders of gangs and drug networks to cease their criminal activities.
Speaking at the Parliament, Minister Imran said that he does not give any leeway to drug trafficking and that the government investigates gang-related crimes as the most serious cases. He said the ministry is working closely with the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to solve these crimes, especially the latest incidents in the Greater Male' Region.
Additionally, Minister Imran highlighted that businesses, senior officials of various institutions, and politicians are involved in the drug networks in the Maldives. He warned them to seize their criminal activities, as he will be relentless in finding everyone involved in the drug trade, especially those working within the state.
The administration has made efforts to tackle the nationwide issues related to drugs. As such, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has formed a special task force to address the problem, and MPS has carried out a large number of drug operations over the last four years, seizing over two tonnes of drugs in the process.
