Gov’t to penalise unlicensed construction companies

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has warned that it will penalise companies that conduct construction projects without a license from April 1.

The ministry stated that the Construction Contractors Regulation requires contractors to register prior to beginning fieldwork. Contractors that are tasked with completing projects worth over USD97,000 are required to obtain a project license, and the ministry will soon begin penalising companies that do not have a license.

The Construction Contractor Regulation was ratified in 2019 to regulate the construction work being conducted in the Maldives. It requires companies that import and produce construction materials and companies that conduct construction projects to register at the ministry. The regulation also classifies the registered companies and establishes guidelines for conducting construction projects.
