Four candidates to contest in MDP primary for Guraidhoo by-election

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed that four candidates will compete in the primary election to finalise a candidate for the by-election of the Guraidhoo Constituency Parliament seat.

MDP has decided to hold a primary election on March 11 to finalise its candidate for the Guraidhoo Constituency by-election. MDP contested for Guraidhoo Constituency during the last three terms but has never won the Parliament seat.

The seat became vacant after Parliamentarian Ibrahim Riza passed away. Riza was undergoing treatment for cancer in Malaysia when he passed away on February 23. He represented the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians. As such, he has served the last three terms as the Parliamentarian for the Guraidhoo Constituency. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary and the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions. He had also previously served as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) decided to hold the by-election for Guraidhoo Constituency on April 15.
