The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions and the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender have held a meeting with the Blind and Visually Impaired Society of the Maldives on protecting ballots cast by persons with visual impairments.
During the meeting, members of the association expressed concern over the lack of security for the ballots case by visually impaired persons. The members noted that the issue is a longstanding one and proposed solutions such as placing a plastic sheet over the ballot with boxes cut out to make it easier for visually impaired persons to cast their vote.
Additionally, the members noted that no authority has objected to this proposal due to legal issues in its implementation. Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who joined the meeting, also said that he can find no reason why the proposal should not be implemented.
