President holds talks with JP Leader over presidential election

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met with the Leader of the Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim to discuss about the upcoming presidential election. The meeting was held at the President's Office.

Speaking to the media outside the President's Office, Qasim said he had a political conversation with President Solih. He, however, said that they did not discuss forming a coalition or how JP would take part in the presidential election. He said JP had passed a resolution to nominate a candidate or form a coalition led by the party, with a final decision to be made by the party council. He also said that he has not discussed forming a coalition with any party yet.

JP is a coalition partner of the current administration led by President Solih. MDP has granted the authority to President Solih to form a coalition for the upcoming election. As such, he has invited some political parties to form a coalition including JP. So far, Adhaalath Party (AP) and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have decided to form a coalition with MDP.

The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced the first round of voting of the presidential election will be held on September 9.
