JP passes resolution to field candidate for presidential election

Jumhooree Party (JP) has passed a resolution to field a candidate to represent JP or a coalition headed by the party for the upcoming presidential election.

The resolution, proposed by Member of the JP Council Abdulla Ahmed, passed unanimously at the JP National Conference with votes from 416 members. The resolution stated that now is the most opportune time for JP to establish its government and serve the nation. It states that the party can financially empower citizens, strengthen the economy, and establish peace by fielding a candidate to represent the party or a coalition headed by the party. It detailed that financial empowerment would lead to the development of infrastructure and essential services, and the establishment of peace as well as independent and educated citizens.

The debate on the resolution was chaired by the Leader of JP Qasim Ibrahim. During the one-hour debate, many members voiced support for fielding a candidate. The JP Council would still have to approve the resolution before the party takes any action.

JP is currently part of the ruling coalition headed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which has granted President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih the power to discuss the formation of a new coalition for the presidential election. President Solih has sent letters to all coalition parties, including JP. However, only Adhaalath Party (AP) has so far agreed to form a coalition with MDP for the upcoming election. In addition, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has also agreed to form a coalition with MDP for the first time.
