PGO advises caution in rental transactions

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has urged the public to be vigilant against fraudulent extortion cases in rental transactions. PGO said cases of fraud and extortion of large sums of money from rental transactions are being reported to the authorities.

Furthermore, PGO said individuals are leasing places, sub-leasing them after changing the agreements from the landlord and taking large sums of money in the name of renting the property to others. PGO said that some people have been extorted for hundreds of thousands even when the public knows of such properties.

Moreover, PGO said there are steps that can be taken to avoid such fraud which include ensuring the tenant is indeed able to rent the property for the said period and meeting with the original owner of the house and clarifying matters in case of doubt. PGO also urged the public to seek the assistance of a lawyer in conducting large-scale rental transactions and urged caution in such transactions, as fraud cases have been on the rise recently.
