Qasim re-elected as JP leader uncontested

Parliamentarian Qasim Ibrahim has been re-elected as the Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) uncontested.

Spokesperson of JP Ali Solih said no other member had submitted their candidacy for the leadership position. Qasim has been the leader of JP since its formation and this would be his fourth term.

JP opened the opportunity for members to submit their candidacies for various positions prior to the national assembly on February 24. The competition for the other senior positions is high, with 12 members vying for the position of deputy leader, including Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula, who is Qasim’s wife.

More than 900 individuals will attend the national assembly to be held from February 24-25 at the Dharubaaruge convention centre. JP was formed in 2008 and currently has 17,913 members.
